Tile & LVT waste calculator
Turn a measured area into boxes to order. The waste follows the laying pattern, and the calculator also gives skirting length and how many door transitions to price.
How the calculation works
Waste depends on the pattern. Straight-lay planks cut cleanly. Diagonal and herringbone layouts lose more at every wall.
Boxes = round up (order area ÷ m² per box)
Skirting (m) = (perimeter − doors × door width) × 1.05
Spare stock, sometimes called attic stock, is the extra the client keeps for repairs. Many specifications ask for 2 to 5%. Read the spec before you leave it out.
Site tips
- Measure net areas per room, then add waste once, not room by room.
- Price transition strips from the door count. They are easy to miss.
- Large-format tiles and patterned vinyl need more waste than the defaults here.
Questions
What waste should I allow for LVT?
About 5 to 7% for straight lay in regular rooms, 10% or more for small rooms, and 15% for herringbone.
Do I calculate waste before or after rounding to boxes?
Before. Add waste to the area, then round up to whole boxes.
How do I calculate skirting?
Take the room perimeter, subtract the door openings, then add about 5% for joints and offcuts.
